Sandalwood Potato soap? Why?
We, at By the Sea Soap Shoppe, are located in Prince Edward Island, "Island of the Potato", but this is not just a gimmicky thing. Potatoes are chock full of nutrients, and are also good for your skin.
We boil the potatoes and pretty well cook the life out them lol. (We don't eat them afterwards, they're done).
We then use the potato water in the soap rather than the distilled water we normally would use. When you use the soap on your skin, you receive the benefits of B and C vitamins, various minerals, as well as important carotenoids and flavonoids.
Basically, it's outer nutrition for your skin!
I find the soap even feels a little different; it's so smooth and moisturizing.
This soap is scented with a Sandalwood fragrance oil that has a rich, balsamic, sweet fragrance with a delicate hint of wood. We find this scent is a favourite among the guys especially.
This soap comes with its own "potato bag" (this makes a really nice gift). But if you'd like to have the bar only, you can get one here.

Potato Water - Feeds your skin with great nutrition! Includes B Vitamins, C Vitamin, potassium, fiber, iron, calcium, phosphorous, copper, carotenoids, and flavonoids
Anti-aging - Potato water helps to retain moisture in your skin and can help with a number of skin conditions including dry skin, wrinkles, age spots, inflammation, and helps with wound healing due to the nutrients in the water.
Coconut Oil - Coconut oil helps to protect your skin from infection, it repairs your skin barrier, and helps to keep your skin hydrated because it regulates how much water escapes through your skin.
Olive and Palm Oils - Between these two oils, there are Vitamins A, D, E and K. There are high amounts of antioxidants and carotenes. Vitamin E especially is an important antioxidant, helping to prevent skin damage and may help with conditions such as eczema, acne and dermatitis.
Moisturizing - Palm Oil is especially moisturizing and helps to smooth your skin.
Moisturizing, moisturizing and moisturizing. This soap is truly moisturizing.
Some of you might be wondering, "Lye? Isn’t lye dangerous? Won’t it harm my skin?”
First - all actual soap is made with lye. No lye, no soap. (A lot of "soap products" in the stores are actually detergent. If you look at the labels, they are not called "soap". They are called "hand wash" or "body cleanser" or some such thing.)
This could become a chemistry lesson, but to make it short - soap is made from lye, fats and liquid. When the lye mixes with the fats and liquid, some kind of chemical reaction goes on, and the lye and fats change into soap and glycerin. In the process, the lye is all used up. Even though lye is used to make the soap, there is no lye left in the soap at all.
This is why soap made with lye is not dangerous, and it definitely won’t hurt your skin.
Because the bars are handmade, you can expect to see slight differences in the size and weight. After the soap is made, it needs to cure for at least one month. However, after it's cured, some of the moisture in the bar continues to evaporate out. The bar shrinks a little; enough that the label we've wrapped around the bar becomes a bit loose and the weight decreases a little. The bar gets harder, and this is actually better. There is nothing lost from the soap, and it will not dissolve as quickly when it does get wet in a shower or bath.
Each bar is approximately 2 1/2 in. x 2 1/2 in. x 1 in. - or 6 cm. x 6 cm. x 2 cm. Weight is between 3.5 and 4 oz., or between 99 and 113 grams.
Please note that because this soap is handmade, the appearance of the soap may be a little different than shown.
It’s October! Colours of the leaves changing and now starting to fall.
We have a lovely, new soap for fall called “Autumn Leaves!” The scent will remind you of walking through an apple orchard and apple pie and cinnamon.
We’ve had a busy summer. For the first time we’ve had quite a number of stores selling our soap. Many of these stores are only open for the summer, and they were busy!
They kept Dennis busy as well; I think he made Blueberry Potato soap every single week throughout the summer. That soap was the #1 seller all summer long.
I would take the soap to craft fairs, and I’d watch someone pick up the Blueberry Potato soap, they’d smell it, look surprised, get the person they were with to smell it, who then said, “That really smells like blueberry!”
And then they’d buy it lol. It was fun.
We will be at quite a number of craft fairs through the fall until Christmas. That will be fun, too. Especially when it's close to Christmas, the craft fairs are so festive.
So, if you’re here on fair Prince Edward Island, hope to see you at one of them!
Have a wonderful fall,
Teresa and Dennis
